Being Green: Recycling of Uncommon Items

I don’t know about you, but our house seems to always have an abundance of odd items that are not the norm when it comes to making a donation to an area non-profit. Personally, I hate throwing something away only to find out that there was someone or somewhere that could have benefited from it.

Below is a list I created for such items.   Please be sure to read the description associated with each item to make sure what you are donating is what is needed as far as condition, amount, expiration date, etc.

Crayons:

Crazy Crayons will recycle your old, broken, unwanted crayons into new ones!  You can send them through UPSP to Crayon Recycling PO Box 683, Lake City, Colorado, 81235 or through FedEX/UPS to Crayon Recycling, 222 North Gunnison Avenue, Lake City, Colorado, 81235.

 

Expired Coupons:

Expired manufacturer’s coupons can be mailed to our military serving overseas!  Find out how by logging on to http://hip2save.com/2013/09/25/got-expired-coupons-send-them-to-us-military-members-stationed-overseas/ .

 

Greeting Cards:

St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Nevada accepts used greeting cards as part of their Greeting Card Upcycle program.  Card fronts from cards such as Christmas, Thank You, Birthday, Get Well Soon, etc. can be sent to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, 100 St. Jude’s Street, Boulder City, NV 89005.  Some restrictions apply.

 

Magazines/Books/Puzzles:

The Clinton County Senior Center will gladly accept stuffed animals, knick-knacks, puzzles, books, magazines, fabric, yarn, quilt batting, and stuffing.  Please make sure items are in good, usable condition.  Contact 989-224-4257 for more information.

 

McDonald’s Toys/Barbies/Action Figures:

TinkrLab in the Meridian Mall is accepting action figures, McDonald toys and almost anything else they can hack.   Contact 517-233-1524 for more information.

 

Office Paper/Books/Magazines:

Paper Gator is a unique fundraising opportunity for your area school or religious institution where they are paid for the weight of paper to be recycled that includes newsprint, catalogs/magazines, junk mail, phone books, office/school paper, and hard/soft cover books.  To find a bin near you, log on to http://www.papergatorrecycling.com/container_finder/finder_area.htm.

 

Pop Tabs:

Collecting pop tabs is a great way to teach kids the importance of recycling while raising funds to help children and their families at the same time.  Local drop off can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan located at 121 South Holmes Street in Lansing.  Contact 517-485-9303 for more information.

 

Prescription Medicine Pill Bottles:

Matthew 25: Ministries out of Cincinnati, OH, accepts empty plastic pill bottles for inclusion in shipments of medical supplies and for shredding/recycling.   Items accepted include prescription and over-the-counter pill bottles both large and small and pill bottles with our without secure caps (child resistant).   To find out how to send your bottles and how to prepare them for shipment, log on to http://m25m.org/pillbottles/.

 

Sheets/Towels/Blankets:

Capital Area Humane Society is taking a collection of old sheets and towels to be used for animals in their care.  Donations can be dropped off to the front desk during business hours.  For a complete list of what is being accepted, log on to https://cahs-lansing.org/support/donate-items/.   Contact 517-626-6060 with questions.
